Titanic Eclipse Edition Preview: Supplement Zine #4

Hi there! Been awhile! It’s time to talk about the final supplement we’re adding for Celestial Bodies’ upcoming kickstarter.

To explain again what the deal is: in addition to the main book, we’re going to be offering a set of zines that add optional ideas for playing the game or perspectives on the game. Two of these include two guest writers bringing their take on The Calamity! The third and fourth supplements, however, are from us. One place where we wanted to add extra focus was around the idea of the Lamplighters themselves and Home-ship life. What does that look like? What are they like? What do they do outside their duties? Celestial Bodies has a very interesting setup after all. There’s a lot of questions left unanswered, and answering them is a great place for a supplement-zine to live.

There are a few approaches we’re taking to this. One approach is just providing some ideas to define home-ships, some brief descriptions of how a few factions do things to give you some ideas, and ways to incorporate them into your game. The second approach is more direct: we’re developing a procedure for downtime.

I heard you like grids. How about two grids overlaid on top of each other?

On the left side of the spread, text over 4 grids: Personality: Think about your Lamplighter’s general vibe. Pick between one of the 4 general personality archetypes below: Hot: High-strung, hot-blooded, moody. Balanced: Collected, determined, professional. Stoic: Calm, unflappable, veteran. Tranquil: Way too calm, disconnected, otherworldly. You can change this as it makes sense for where your character is, generally, as their life and circumstances change. Note down their personality grid. On the right side, text over a 36-cell grid split into 9 4-cell grids: Activity and Event: When your Lamplighters have some time to themselves, think about what they’re doing generally, then pick out the closest Activity among those listed. Roll two dice as per a hit roll. The result corresponds to two things: The specific event that happens within that activity, lettered A through I (see the grid below); How well that event goes based on your Personality grid. Good outcomes generally indicate you got what you were expecting; bad outcomes generally indicate something went wrong, you went too far, or something unexpected happened; neutral outcomes sometimes mean results in between, or sometimes both negative and positive outcomes. The general outcome is the same in every case: you get learn and narrate a little bit about your Lamplighter and/or the Home-ship and those who live on it.

If that sounds like a great addition, check out our kickstarter! Coming in March!
